Roulette payouts are quoted "to one": 35:1 means you keep your stake and receive 35 times it. A $10 straight-up win returns $360 in total.

'To one' versus 'for one'

Roulette payouts are quoted to one, which means your stake is returned on top. A 35:1 straight-up win on $10 returns $360: your $10 back plus $350 profit. Some game-show variants quote multipliers for one instead — a 500x Lightning hit returns 500 times the stake in total, stake included. Read the paytable wording.

Covering multiple numbers

Spreading chips across several inside bets feels safer and costs more. Put six chips on six separate numbers and you win 35 units but lose 5 on every winning spin, netting 30 — against a true chance of 6/37. The house edge is unchanged at 2.70%; you have simply bought lower variance at exactly fair price.

A worked example

Four $10 chips on four separate corners. Each corner pays 8 to 1, so a win returns $90 on that chip while the other three lose: $90 back against $40 staked, a $50 profit.

The chance that at least one of the four corners lands is 16/37 = 43.2%. On the other 56.8% of spins you lose the full $40. Over 37 spins the arithmetic lands, as always, on −2.70% of everything staked.

Reading the paytable wording

“Pays 35 to 1” means stake returned plus 35 times it — a $10 bet returns $360 in total.

“Pays 35 for 1” means 35 times the stake in total, stake included — $350 on a $10 bet. The difference is one full unit and it matters most on the high multipliers used by game-show variants, where “500x” almost always means for one.

Questions

Does a 35:1 payout mean I get 35 times my stake?

You get 35 times your stake in profit, plus your original stake back — 36 times in total. A $10 bet returns $360.

Why does Lightning Roulette pay 29:1?

The reduced straight-up payout funds the 50x–500x multipliers. The overall RTP works out slightly below standard European roulette.
