American roulette adds a second green pocket — the double zero — without changing a single payout. That one extra pocket takes the house edge from 2.70% to 5.26%, which means the same bankroll dies roughly twice as fast.

European and American roulette wheels side by side: 37 pockets and a 2.70% house edge against 38 pockets and 5.26%
The wheel you sit at is the first decision. Single zero: 2.70%% house edge. Double zero: 5.26%%. Same payouts on both.

The cost of one extra pocket

American roulette is European roulette with a double zero added and no compensating change to any payout. A straight-up bet still pays 35 to 1, but the true odds are now 37 to 1. The house edge rises from 2.70% to 5.26% — nearly double.

In practical terms: $10 a spin, 50 spins an hour. On a European wheel you lose $13.50 an hour in expectation. On an American wheel, $26.30. Same game, same layout, same experience — roughly twice the price. If both wheels are available on a site, there is no argument for the American one.

The five-number bet is worse still

American layouts add a bet unavailable in Europe: the top line, covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, paying 6 to 1. True odds are 6.6 to 1, which pushes the edge on that one bet to 7.89% — the worst bet on any standard roulette table anywhere. Avoid it entirely.

When you might still play it

Occasionally an American table is the only roulette running, or it carries a promotion that outweighs the difference. Do the arithmetic before accepting that trade: a 2.56 percentage-point edge difference on $2,000 of turnover is $51. A promotion has to be worth more than that to break even.

Why the double zero exists at all

The double-zero wheel predates the single-zero one. Early French wheels carried both a zero and a double zero, and when the game crossed the Atlantic in the nineteenth century that configuration stayed — some early American wheels even added an eagle symbol as a third house pocket, pushing the edge close to 13%.

Europe dropped the second zero to compete. America did not need to: the game was already established, and the added margin funded the floor. The result is an accident of history that still costs players money every day.

The maths, spelled out

A straight-up bet wins once every 38 spins and pays 35 to 1. Over 38 spins staking $1 each time you wager $38 and expect to return $36 — a loss of $2, or 5.26%.

Run the same arithmetic on red. Red wins 18 times in 38, paying 1 to 1. Stake $38 across 38 spins, win 18 of them, collect $36. Same $2. Every bet on the layout, with the single exception of the top line, lands on exactly that number.

When the difference actually bites

Over 100 spins at $10, the extra edge costs about $26 — easily lost in the noise of a single session. Over a year of weekly play it is the difference between a hobby and a noticeably expensive one.

Concretely: two hours a week, $10 a spin, 50 spins an hour. European costs about $1,400 a year in expectation. American costs about $2,735. Same game, same hours, same stake, and an extra $1,300 for the privilege of one green pocket.

Demo play versus real money

Two things change when money is involved, and neither of them is the maths.

The first is pace. On a demo table you can spin as fast as you can click. At a live table the dealer sets the rhythm, and at an RNG table the software does. Faster play means more turnover per hour, and turnover multiplied by the house edge is your cost.

The second is how losses feel. A $200 drawdown in play money is a number; the same drawdown in real money changes decisions. Most of the damage done at roulette tables is done in the twenty minutes after a bad run, not during it. If you are using this demo to test an idea, test what you would do after eight losses in a row — that is the part that matters.

Bankroll, in plain numbers

The formula worth memorising is short: expected cost = average bet × spins per hour × house edge. Everything else is detail.

For even-money betting, hold at least 100 times your average bet before you sit down, and 250 or more if you bet straight up. Below about 20 units, ordinary variance will end the session long before the house edge does — and that outcome usually gets blamed on a “cold table” rather than on the bankroll being too small for the stake.

Our bankroll calculator turns those numbers into hours for your own stake, and the strategy simulator will show you the distribution of outcomes rather than just the average.

How this demo generates results

Each spin draws a pocket uniformly from the wheel using your browser's cryptographic random number generator. There is no weighting, no near-miss logic and no adjustment based on how you are doing. Previous spins have no influence on the next one — the generator keeps no state between draws.

Payouts follow the standard paytable shown on this page, including the variant-specific rules: La Partage on French tables, lightning multipliers where they apply, and two-ball settlement on Double Ball. Balances are play money, reset whenever you like, and nothing is stored on a server.

American Roulette FAQ

Is this American Roulette demo free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with a $1,000 play-money balance, requires no account and has no cash value. You can reset the balance as often as you like.

What is the house edge on American Roulette?

5.26%. Over a long session that is the percentage of everything you stake that the game keeps, regardless of which bets you choose.

Does the demo use the same odds as a real casino?

Yes. Pockets are drawn uniformly and payouts match the standard paytable shown on this page. What a real table adds is real money, a dealer or provider RNG certification, and table limits.

Can I win money on this demo?

No. There is no deposit, no withdrawal and no prize of any kind. It is a learning and testing tool. If you want to play for real money, the casinos listed further down this page offer American Roulette or a close equivalent.
