Responsible Gambling

Roulette is entertainment with a fixed price. Here is how to keep it that way — and where to get help.

If gambling has stopped being fun, stop playing and talk to someone. The organisations listed at the bottom of this page are free, confidential and independent of any operator.

The honest framing

Roulette has a negative expected value. Over time, the house edge means the game costs money — 2.70% of everything staked on a European wheel. That is not a warning label bolted on for compliance; it is the arithmetic the entire industry is built on.

The healthy way to hold this is the same way you would hold a cinema ticket: you are paying for an evening's entertainment, and the price is roughly your average bet times the number of spins times the house edge. Our bankroll calculator will tell you that price in advance. If the number makes you uncomfortable, that is useful information.

Practical limits that work

  • Set a deposit limit on day one, in the account settings, before you play. Every licensed operator offers this and almost nobody uses it.
  • Decide the session budget before you open the table, and treat it as spent the moment you sit down.
  • Never redeposit in the same session. If the budget is gone, the session is over.
  • Use a time limit as well as a money limit. Fast RNG roulette can triple your hourly cost without feeling any different.
  • Keep gambling money separate from money with a job — rent, bills, savings.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

  • Playing to win back money you have lost.
  • Betting more than you planned, repeatedly.
  • Hiding how much you play, or how much you spend, from people close to you.
  • Borrowing to gamble, or gambling with money meant for something else.
  • Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you are not playing.
  • Believing a system, a number or a table is "due".

If several of these are familiar, the most useful next step is talking to one of the services below rather than reading more about roulette.

Tools every licensed casino must offer

  • Deposit, loss and wager limits — daily, weekly or monthly.
  • Session time reminders.
  • Cool-off periods — typically 24 hours to 6 weeks.
  • Self-exclusion — six months to permanent, and it cannot be reversed early.

Blocking software such as Gamban, BetBlocker and GAMSTOP (UK) works at the device or account level and is independent of any operator.

Myths worth dismantling

  • "I am due a win." The wheel has no memory. After nine reds, the tenth spin is 48.65% red on a European wheel, exactly as the first was.
  • "I can win it back." Chasing increases turnover, and turnover multiplied by the house edge is cost. Chasing is the single most expensive habit in the game.
  • "I am good at this." Roulette has no decisions after the bet is placed. There is no skill to be good at, which means a winning run is not evidence of anything.
  • "A system protects me." Progression systems convert many small wins into rare large losses of equivalent total size. They change the shape of the risk, not its size.

Talking to someone about it

People tend to wait far longer than they should, usually out of embarrassment. The services below are free, confidential and independent of any gambling operator — they are not going to lecture you and they have heard everything before.

If it is easier to start with someone you know, the useful sentence is a small one: "I think I am spending more on gambling than I want to." That is enough to begin with, and it is considerably easier than the conversation that happens later if nothing changes.

If you are worried about someone else

Signs to watch for are financial (unexplained shortfalls, borrowing, secrecy about money) and behavioural (withdrawal, irritability, long unexplained absences). Confrontation tends to produce denial. What works better is naming a specific observation without an accusation attached, and pointing at a service rather than at yourself as the solution. GamCare and Gambling Therapy both run support lines specifically for friends and family.

Under 18

Gambling is illegal for anyone under 18 in almost every jurisdiction, and under 21 in some. The demo games on this site use play money, but they simulate real gambling and are not intended for minors. If you share a device, parental control software such as Net Nanny or CYBERsitter can restrict access to gambling content.
