Lightning Roulette is Evolution's electrified single-zero game. Before each spin, between one and five numbers are struck by lightning and assigned a multiplier from 50x to 500x. The cost is that ordinary straight-up bets pay 29:1 instead of 35:1.
How the multipliers work
Before the ball is released, between one and five numbers are struck by lightning and given a multiplier of 50x, 100x, 150x, 200x, 300x or 500x. If your straight-up bet is on a struck number and it wins, you are paid the multiplier instead of the standard price.
The funding for those multipliers comes from ordinary straight-up bets, which pay 29 to 1 rather than 35 to 1. Outside bets are untouched: red/black still pays 1 to 1 and still carries the normal 2.70% edge.
The real return
Evolution publishes an RTP of 97.30% for outside bets and 97.10% for straight-up bets on Lightning Roulette — so the overall cost is marginally higher than standard European roulette, not lower. What changes dramatically is variance. A 500x hit on a $5 bet returns $2,500, which is why the game is popular; the flip side is long stretches of nothing.
Playing it sensibly
If you want the multipliers, bet straight up on a small number of pockets and accept that the hit rate is low. Betting straight up on twenty numbers to 'cover' the board destroys the maths — you pay 20 units to win 29, which is a terrible trade on every spin that is not a lightning strike.
Where the multipliers come from
Nothing is added to the game. The multipliers are funded by cutting the straight-up payout from 35:1 to 29:1 — in effect, every straight-up bettor contributes to a pot that gets redistributed as lightning strikes.
Evolution publishes 97.10% RTP for straight-up bets and 97.30% for outside bets, so the game is fractionally more expensive than standard European roulette, not less. What you buy with that fraction is a much longer tail: a 500x strike on a $5 bet returns $2,500 from a single spin.
Variance, and why it matters here
A normal straight-up bet hits once every 37 spins. On Lightning, the same bet hits at the same rate, but the payout distribution is bimodal — mostly 29:1, occasionally enormous. That makes bankroll planning harder, because the average return is dominated by outcomes you will rarely see.
Practically: if you want the multipliers, expect long dry stretches and size your stakes so those stretches do not end the session. If you cannot tolerate that, bet outside — outside bets on Lightning behave exactly like ordinary European roulette.
The trap: covering the board
The most common Lightning mistake is placing straight-up bets on fifteen or twenty numbers to “improve the chance of catching a strike”. Do the arithmetic. Twenty $1 bets cost $20; a normal hit returns $30, netting $10. You need the hit rate of twenty numbers (20/37 = 54%) to carry a payout that only barely exceeds the stake, and on the 46% of spins where nothing lands you lose the full $20.
Spreading straight-up bets widely converts a high-variance game into a low-variance game with a worse payout structure. If you want low variance, bet red.
Demo play versus real money
Two things change when money is involved, and neither of them is the maths.
The first is pace. On a demo table you can spin as fast as you can click. At a live table the dealer sets the rhythm, and at an RNG table the software does. Faster play means more turnover per hour, and turnover multiplied by the house edge is your cost.
The second is how losses feel. A $200 drawdown in play money is a number; the same drawdown in real money changes decisions. Most of the damage done at roulette tables is done in the twenty minutes after a bad run, not during it. If you are using this demo to test an idea, test what you would do after eight losses in a row — that is the part that matters.
Bankroll, in plain numbers
The formula worth memorising is short: expected cost = average bet × spins per hour × house edge. Everything else is detail.
For even-money betting, hold at least 100 times your average bet before you sit down, and 250 or more if you bet straight up. Below about 20 units, ordinary variance will end the session long before the house edge does — and that outcome usually gets blamed on a “cold table” rather than on the bankroll being too small for the stake.
Our bankroll calculator turns those numbers into hours for your own stake, and the strategy simulator will show you the distribution of outcomes rather than just the average.
How this demo generates results
Each spin draws a pocket uniformly from the wheel using your browser's cryptographic random number generator. There is no weighting, no near-miss logic and no adjustment based on how you are doing. Previous spins have no influence on the next one — the generator keeps no state between draws.
Payouts follow the standard paytable shown on this page, including the variant-specific rules: La Partage on French tables, lightning multipliers where they apply, and two-ball settlement on Double Ball. Balances are play money, reset whenever you like, and nothing is stored on a server.

Lightning Roulette FAQ
Is this Lightning Roulette demo free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with a $1,000 play-money balance, requires no account and has no cash value. You can reset the balance as often as you like.
What is the house edge on Lightning Roulette?
2.99%. Over a long session that is the percentage of everything you stake that the game keeps, regardless of which bets you choose.
Does the demo use the same odds as a real casino?
Yes. Pockets are drawn uniformly and payouts match the standard paytable shown on this page. What a real table adds is real money, a dealer or provider RNG certification, and table limits.
Can I win money on this demo?
No. There is no deposit, no withdrawal and no prize of any kind. It is a learning and testing tool. If you want to play for real money, the casinos listed further down this page offer Lightning Roulette or a close equivalent.
